What To Expect During Your First Year At Sir John Nelthorpe

To ensure each and every pupil is happy and is therefore able to be successful and make the maximum progress in all the opportunities available we have there are a number of events & support in place:

Extended Lunch - During the first full week Year 7 have an additional 30 minutes prior to lunch starting for the rest of the school. This gives time for pupils to become fully aware of the procedures and the large variety of food available.

Buddies Support - With every new Year 7 form group there are two Year 8 buddies assigned to provide peer support. These buddies will be available during registration, break and lunch to answer any questions pupils may have or direct to staff members who can answer them. They are also there to direct to lesson if pupils are unsure where to go.

Settling In Evening - We know how important it is to get reassurance that your child has settled well, this evening is in addition to the normal parents evening held later in the year. The settling in evening takes place towards the end of the first half term, providing an opportunity to meet your child’s form tutor who will give an overview to how they have settled. It is also a chance to ask any questions you may have, although we also believe these can be asked at any point throughout the year by contacting the school via phone, email or pupil planner.

Parents' Evening - This takes place during the Spring term and provides an opportunity to make appointments with your child’s teachers to provide specific feedback on the progress they have been making in the subject.

Grandparents Day - We recognise the important part grandparents and the extended family play in supporting your child and believe it is important share aspect of your child’s school life with them. This takes place during the last half term of the year with grandparents or members of the extended family being invited in for an afternoon to experience some lessons with their grandchild.

Extra-Curricular Activities - There are many different activities for the Year 7 pupils to become involved in outside of the usual classes. These include music and drama productions, house events, sports teams/competitions and trips (both residential and day trips) including the residential trip to France in the Summer term.
