Drama Curriculum

Intent

Drama at Sir John Nelthorpe School is viewed as a both a practical and academic discipline which is designed to support the development of skills needed to succeed both in English as well as the wider curriculum. Therefore, the Drama curriculum is designed to have close ties to the analytical, evaluative and critical skills needed to succeed in English and other academic subjects, whilst also allowing students to further engage with and develop understanding of literary texts.

Aims for Key Stage 3

Demonstrate a broad and balanced understanding of dramatic techniques, styles and explorative strategies;

Understand how to apply explorative strategies and are able to use these to think and devise as ‘theatre-makers’;

Make analytical, evaluative and critical judgements about Drama, both in performance and in texts studied;

Pupils have one hour of Drama per week and are taught in the same group as their English lesson.

In each year at Key Stage 3, pupils study dramatic forms through playscripts and cinema and use these mediums to support their study of English literature. Pupils also develop their spoken language skills through performance of poetry, speeches and a Shakespeare play.
