RE Curriculum Information

Intent

Our RE curriculum aims to produce pupils who are able to navigate the world they live in with a working knowledge of moral, ethical and religious issue. We challenge pupils to engage with these complex issues and help them to make sense of the world around them. We encourage them to question, debate and ultimately become citizens of the world.

Aims for Key Stage 3:

  • To have an understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of individuals, societies, communities, and cultures.
  • Be thoughtful, forward-thinking citizens who have a clear appreciation of tolerance and diversity.

The Religious Education course is delivered in one fifty minute lesson per week to KS3 pupils in mixed ability groups. Pupils will consider the following topics:

Year 7:

  • Why study RE?
  • What is it like to be Christian?
  • What is it like to be Muslim?
  • What is it like to be Hindu?
  • What is religion and belief?

Year 8:

  • What does it mean to be good?
  • How easy is it to be religious in the modern day?
  • How important are relationships to religion?

Year 9:

  • Does God exist?
  • Why does Prejudice and Discrimination exist?
  • How can religions show creativity?
  • Why is life special?

Aims for Key Stage 4:

  • To have studied a range of case studies that will develop a passion and life-long interest in and understanding of the world around us.
  • Be thoughtful, forward-thinking citizens who have a clear appreciation of tolerance and diversity.
  • To have knowledge of local, national, and global religious, moral and ethical issues through a range of topics

In Key Stage 4 all pupils study 1 fifty minute lesson a week of RE and cover the following topics:

Year 10:

  • Where does right and wrong come from?
  • What are some alternative religions?
  • Why do we have human rights?
  • Should capital punishment be allowed?
  • Why do people suffer?
  • How do we know what is real?

Year 11:

  • Can war ever be justified?
  • Why does extremism exist?
  • Religious, moral, and ethical debates (Medical ethics, Environmental ethics)

Pupils can pick Religious Studies at GCSE. They will follow AQA religious studies specification A. This course will encourage students to:

  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of religions and non-religious beliefs, such as atheism and humanism
  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, teachings and sources of wisdom and authority
  • Develop their ability to construct well-argued, well-informed, balanced and structured written arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth of understanding of the subject
  • Reflect on and develop their own values, beliefs and attitudes in the light of what they have learnt and contribute to their preparation for adult life in a pluralistic society and global community.

Year 10:

  • Christianity: Beliefs and Teachings
  • Christianity: Practices
  • Religion, human rights and social justice
  • Religion, crime and punishment
  • Religion and life

Year 11:

  • Islam: Beliefs and Teachings
  • Islam: Practices
  • Revision and exam practice
