European Day Of Languages

The European Day of Languages is in its tenth year this year. It is sponsored by the Council of Europe. We have organised various events over the years to celebrate this day. This year the MFL Faculty challenged all subject teachers to use foreign languages in their lessons, students completed a tally in each lesson to record teachers' performance, with prizes for the most successful teachers. All staff rose to the challenge with more than 10 different languages being used throughout the day. PE staff were scoring in French, Mrs Bolton the Drama teacher got students to complete warm up games in Welsh. Teachers were vying for extra points shouting "Hola!" to students across the playground, this carried on into the staffroom with a lot of "Franglais" being muted at one another throughout break and lunchtime!

The MFL Faculty organised a French Breakfast for over 120 Year 7 students, we all ate croissants and baguette in the canteen. There was poster competition for Year 7 and 8 students and a House Team European Quiz at lunchtime. It was wonderful to hear so many foreign languages being spoken around the school so enthusiastically. Well done SJN staff and students, your language skills are very impressive.

Head of MFL Faculty
